Regional Travel Metrics (RTM)

Regional Travel Metrics (RTM) converts GPS data into essential metrics for transportation planning, offering insights for funding, benchmarking, and emissions planning.

RTM transforms raw GPS data into scaled, defensible metrics that transportation planners rely on - from VMT and idling to congestion behavior. With vehicle classification and Expansion Factors built-in, RTM replaces stitched datasets and manual counts with audit-ready insights for funding justification, corridor benchmarking, and emissions planning. You can use Regional Travel Metrics to validate freight investments, prioritize infrastructure upgrades and support data-driven grant submissions for NHFP, RAISE and INFRA programs.

Regional Travel Metrics for predictive road maintenance planning

Analyze traffic to uncover pavement stress. Set up and run your analysis by defining the geographic area and time frame, then applying specific vehicle filters (e.g., Class 7–8 heavy trucks) to focus on the types of vehicles that cause the most road degradation.

Prioritize maintenance and justify funding. Load your results to identify high-impact corridors using the color-coded map. Then, use the detailed metrics—like breakdowns by roadway type and operational characteristics—to justify maintenance priorities and strengthen funding applications.

Setting up an analysis with standard zones

Learn how to set up a Regional Travel Metrics (RTM) analysis using standard zones by selecting geographic locations and adjusting travel metric filters.

You can run RTM analysis for Standard or Custom zones. To use standard zones:

  1. From the main menu, select Regional Travel Metrics.
  2. Select Standard from the zone selection mode.
  3. Select a geographic location to analyze.
  4. Open the Choose a region to select zones menu to select the country where your analysis will take place. You can also search for a country by typing in the search bar. To select an entire country, click its name, then select Done. If you wish to narrow down your analysis to a certain region, click the country’s name.
  5. Once you select a country, a list of its subregions (states or provinces) displays. If you wish to select an entire subregion, click its name, then select Done. To drill further into a specific location, click on a subregion to view its subregions (cities, towns, etc.) If you wish to narrow down your analysis to a certain region, click the region’s name. Continue this process until you have reached your area of interest.
  6. Search the name of your intended zone type using the search bar, or click the dropdown menu to view a list of available zones.
  7. Select the zone(s) you wish to add to your analysis by typing the name of your intended zone in the search bar under Select a zone, or use the dropdown menu to select from a list of zones, then select Continue.

The selected zones will display under the Areas to Analyze section.

  8. Adjust Travel Metric Filters as needed before running your analysis.

Setting up an analysis with custom zones

Learn how to set up a Regional Travel Metrics (RTM) analysis using custom zones, including selecting zones and adjusting travel metric filters.

You can run RTM analysis for Standard or Custom zones. To use custom zones:

  1. From the main menu, select Regional Travel Metrics.
  2. Select Custom from the zone selection mode.
  3. Search the name of your intended zone type using the search bar, or click the dropdown menu to view a list of available zones.
  4. Select the zone(s) you wish to add to your analysis by typing the name of your intended zone in the search bar under Select a zone, or use the dropdown menu to select from a list of zones, then select Continue.

The selected zones will display under the Areas to Analyze section.

  5. Adjust Travel Metric Filters as needed before running your analysis.
